Zermatt Tourism states it plainly: Zermatt has always been car-free. Private vehicles stop in Tasch. The Matterhorn Gotthard Railway covers the last five kilometres in 12 minutes, with shuttle trains every 20 minutes into Bahnhofplatz. That is not a vibe. It is the arrival.

Saastal Tourismus calls Saas-Fee a car-free village at 1,800 metres, under the Dom at 4,545 metres. The sustainability page says the glacier village decided in 1951 to remain traffic-free, joined the Gemeinschaft autofreier Schweizer Tourismusorte, and is a founding member of Alliance in the Alps. Electric vehicles exist for freight. Guest cars do not enter the village.

From the first overnight stay, Saastal Tourismus says the SaastalCard covers cable cars except Metro Alpin, plus the postbus in the Saas Valley. That is a pedestrian day without buying a ski pass. Metro Alpin stays extra. Confirm the current inclusions on the destination site before you assume a glacier restaurant is in the card.

The road ends in Lauterbrunnen. The village sits at 1,274 metres.
Wengen Tourism: the village is car-free and can only be reached from Lauterbrunnen by public transport, on foot, or by bicycle. The Wengernalp Railway has served it since 1893. Jungfrau Railways repeats the same instruction: park at Lauterbrunnen station, then take the cog railway. Wengen is also the Lauberhorn World Cup village, at the foot of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau.

The municipality of Serfaus and the destination both say the same thing: since 1985 Serfaus has run the smallest and highest air-cushion underground, moving up to 3,000 people an hour to the cable-car station, free of charge. The 2017 to 2019 rebuild made it barrier-free and suitable for strollers. The village itself is autofrei. You park at the valley station and ride under the street.

Of the 141 resorts where we hold a verified ski-school starting age, 86 start at 3, 33 at 4, and 12 as young as 2. Ski kindergarten (Skikindergarten, jardin des neiges) is a full day of play with one or two hours on snow. Kinderclub Lech publishes up to two hours in the snow inside a 9am to 4pm day. Childcare is the only product that goes below 2. English booking pages blur the three. The decoder is the reason the week works.

The cohort moves every season. Comparison sites are often a year behind.
Silvretta Montafon, Kreischberg, and Saalbach-Hinterglemm all publish "born 2021 or later" free cards for 2026/27. An age rule has to be checked against a birthday at the window. A birth year is read off a passport once. That is why a stale "under 6" on a blog is so often wrong. We quoted nine operator pages in the index. Check the operator again before you book.

You need the guest card from local lodging. It is not the walk-up price.
Ischgl: under 10 travel free with a parent, 2026/27, on the VIP tariff only, which requires an Ischgl or Mathon guest card from local accommodation. That is a consequence, not a slogan. Families who book a cheaper place outside the guest-card zone do not get the free child pass they saw in a roundup.

A European blue is not an American blue.
Italy uses percent. Switzerland uses degrees. France sets no national gradient.
Italy is the only country in our set where piste colours are binding national law: Decreto Legislativo 40/2021, Article 5, blue not over 25 percent, red not over 40 percent, black above that. Switzerland's SKUS 2025 guidelines cap blue at 15 degrees and red at 25 degrees (about 26.8 percent and 46.6 percent). No official body publishes a conversion to North American symbols. NSAA says US ratings are consistent only inside one resort.

You can ski France without hiring a car.
SNCF and TGV to the Alps is a published itinerary, not a fantasy.
We already published the SNCF and TGV routes that put a family in a French resort without a rental car, and a separate DACH guide for trains from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The load-bearing fact is that several of the villages on this list (Zermatt, Wengen, Stoos, Avoriaz once you are on the plateau) are designed for arrival without a car. The driving guides exist for the families who still drive, because vignettes and winter-tyre rules are how the trip gets expensive before the first chair.

France splits school holidays into zones. A February week that is quiet in one academy is the most expensive week in another. We published the zone calendar against ski timing. American families who copy a UK half-term onto a French resort without checking the zone are how you end up in the one week the village was built to survive, not to enjoy.

Born 2012 to 2020 pay the child rate. Born after 1 January 2021 ride free.
The Zillertaler Superskipass for winter 2026/27 (4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027) prices a 6-day adult pass at EUR 399 and a child pass at EUR 179.50 for birth years 2012 to 2020. Children born after 01.01.2021 ride free with a paying supervising adult. Photo ID is required for every discounted category. Ski school is usually the larger line after lodging.
Every kids-ski-free rule in our index is a lift pass. Ski school, rental, and lunch are separate everywhere we checked. Ischgl's six-day children's group course was EUR 345 for 2026/27. Deer Valley's Adventure Club was $405 to $470 per child per day for 2026-27. The ocean-crossing math is not "Europe is free." It is "the lift line shrinks, the lesson line does not."

Each resort writes the family pass differently. There is no national number.
French family lift-pass discounts are real and they are not one product. We published how forfait famille actually works, resort by resort, because a "family pass" on a booking engine can mean two adults plus two children, or a household rate, or nothing at all outside school holidays. Read the resort's own tariff before you tell the group chat you have a deal.

Austria's digital vignette has an 18-day shape. Both are easy to get wrong.
If you do drive, the motorway vignette is not optional and it is not the same product in Switzerland and Austria. Avoriaz is built as one. Most "ski-in" listings are a walk in ski boots.

Ischgl's VIP tariff is the worked example. Ask before you book the apartment.
