Germany Family Ski Resorts
Germany doesn't get the Alps hype that France and Switzerland do, which is exactly why it should be on your shortlist. Smaller crowds, lower prices, and resorts genuinely built around young skiers, not just tolerating them. If you're coming from the US, a week here with lodging and food will almost certainly cost less than a comparable week in Colorado, without sacrificing the charm (think cowbell, Glühwein, and snow-dusted Bavarian villages that look like someone turned a Christmas card into a ski resort). The three resorts worth your attention are Reit im Winkl, Oberstdorf, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Reit im Winkl scores highest of the three at 6.9/10 and is particularly well-suited for the 3 to 12 crowd, with a setup that doesn't overwhelm first-timers. Oberstdorf runs close behind at 6.6/10 and shares that same younger-kids focus, with terrain that builds confidence without boring the adults. Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the biggest name of the bunch, which cuts both ways, more terrain and infrastructure, but also more of a scene. Its 6.2/10 score reflects a resort that serves families well without being purpose-built for them. February half-term weeks book fast across all three, so if your travel dates are flexible, the first two weeks of February or early March give you better snow and thinner crowds.
