El Niño and Tahoe 2026/27: The Strongest Signal in North America

No ski region in North America responds to El Niño like Tahoe. Palisades averaged 186% of its normal snowpack across the three strongest events and hit 256% in 1982-83. Here is what that actually means for a family week, including the two ways a huge Tahoe winter can still ruin your trip.

If you are going to book one region on the strength of an El Niño forecast, Tahoe is the defensible choice. It is the strongest signal we measured anywhere in North America, and it is not close.

But "strongest signal" is not the same as "guaranteed great week", and Tahoe in particular has two ways of turning a record winter into a miserable family holiday. Both are predictable. Both come down to choices you make before you book.

This page uses the snow records from the automated stations across the Tahoe basin, most with 47 years of daily measurements, and it says plainly where those records stop being able to tell you anything.

The short answer

The odds really are good here, and better than anywhere else we looked. Every Tahoe resort we could measure came out above its own normal across the three strongest El Niño winters, ranging from 106% to 186%.

The two risks are the rain line and the road. Tahoe sits low for a mountain range, the lake surface is at about 6,225 feet, and El Niño storms arrive warm as well as wet. A storm that buries the summit can rain on the beginner slopes. And the same storm that delivers the snow closes the passes you need to reach it.

And one winter in three did not deliver at all. 2015-16 was a very strong El Niño and Palisades Tahoe finished at 99% of normal, which is to say completely ordinary.

What actually happened, resort by resort

Peak snow water equivalent, the standard measure of how much snow is sitting on the mountain, at the automated station nearest each resort. Each figure is a percentage of that same station's own median across its full record. 100 is a completely normal year for that site.

Two things that table is not telling you

Sugar Bowl's row is weak and we would rather say so. Its nearest station sits 31km away and its record does not reach 1982-83, so that 106 rests on two winters at a site that is not really Sugar Bowl. Treat it as a gap, not as a finding.

Northstar's station is in the valley. Truckee #2 sits at 6,500 feet, well below most of Northstar's terrain, which is why its normal peak snowpack of 15.5 inches looks so thin next to Palisades' 43.1. That is not a statement about Northstar's skiing. It is a statement about how little snow sits at 6,500 feet in this basin, and it turns out to be the most useful number on the page. In Tahoe, which side of the crest beats how high you are

We pulled every long-running snow station within 60km of the lake, 23 of them, and checked the obvious assumption: higher means more snow.

It barely holds. Elevation explains only about a fifth of the difference between these sites. Ward Creek, at 6,750 feet, carries a normal peak of 36.9 inches. Hagans Meadow, a thousand feet higher at 7,740 feet, carries 16.6 inches. Monitor Pass, higher still at 8,320 feet, carries 15.3.

Sort the same stations by which side of the Sierra Crest they sit on and the picture sharpens. The windward, western stations average about 7,100 feet and hold a normal peak of 26.5 inches. The leeward, eastern stations average about 8,070 feet, nearly a thousand feet higher, and hold 22.3 inches.

The west side is lower and snowier. That is orographic lift doing the work: Pacific storms are forced up the western slope, drop most of their moisture there, and arrive on the eastern side already wrung out. In this basin, being in the storm's path is worth more than a thousand feet of altitude.

Why this matters for an El Niño winter specifically: El Niño does not change where the mountains are. It sends more storms down the same track, so the boost lands on top of whatever a site already collects. It multiplies the existing pattern rather than flattening it.

The rain line, which is how a record winter ruins a family week

This is the part that catches families, and it is specific to Tahoe in a way it is not to Colorado.

Tahoe is a low basin. The lake sits at roughly 6,225 feet, and several resorts load their beginners in at close to that. Colorado resorts commonly start two to four thousand feet higher. That difference does not matter in a cold winter. It matters enormously in a warm, wet one.

El Niño storms in the Sierra often arrive as warm, moisture-loaded systems off the Pacific. Warmer air raises the elevation at which snow becomes rain. So the mountain reports a huge storm total, the summit really is excellent, and the ski school meeting point at the base is in the rain.

Your children ski the bottom of the mountain. That is where the beginner terrain, the magic carpets and the lesson meeting points are. A family's experience of a warm storm is decided at the base elevation, not at the summit, which is exactly backwards from how resorts advertise themselves.

Real talk: when you compare Tahoe resorts, compare the base, not the peak. And check whether the lower mountain has snowmaking, because in a warm year that is the insurance that actually pays out.

The road is the other risk, and nobody plans for it

The storms that produce these numbers are the same storms that close the way in.

Most families reach Tahoe by driving from Reno or Sacramento, which means crossing a pass. In a heavy Sierra storm cycle those routes go to chain control, and in the worst of it they close outright. A flight that lands fine can still leave you three hours short of your accommodation.

This is not a reason to avoid Tahoe in a big year. It is a reason to build the trip so a closed road costs you a morning rather than a day:

  • Arrive a day before your lessons start, not the same morning.
  • Carry chains, or rent a vehicle that is legally exempt, and know which yours is before you are in a queue in the dark.
  • Prefer accommodation on the same side of the pass as the resort you booked.
  • Check road conditions the night before rather than on the morning, because chain control goes up faster than it comes down.

The winter that should temper all of this

2015-16 was a very strong El Niño, comparable in size to the one now building, and it was widely forecast as a drought-breaking Sierra winter.

Palisades Tahoe finished at 99% of its normal peak snowpack. Northstar at 100%. Homewood at 103%. Completely ordinary years, from an event that was anything but ordinary.

One in three of the strongest El Niños on record simply did not deliver here. And three is the entire sample: there are only three very strong events in the reliable measurement era, which is not many to reason from. Anyone quoting you a confident Tahoe forecast for 2026/27 is working from the same three winters and choosing not to mention the third.

The Climate Prediction Center puts it plainly in its own August discussion: with an event this size, El Niño-like impacts are more likely, but they are not guaranteed.

So what should a family actually do

The signal is real and it is reasonable to let it nudge a decision you were already close to. It is not a reason to restructure the trip.

Booking Tahoe in an El Niño winter

  • Compare base elevations rather than summit heights, because the base is where your family's week is decided
  • Check that the lower mountain and the beginner area have snowmaking, not just that the resort has snowmaking somewhere
  • Favour west-side terrain if raw snow depth is what you want, since the windward slope collects more even at lower elevation
  • Favour higher base elevations if a warm storm cycle would wreck your week, which is the more common family problem
  • Arrive a day early so a chain control or a pass closure costs you a morning, not a lesson day
  • Carry chains or know your vehicle's exemption before you are queuing in the dark
  • Book refundable where the premium is small, because a three-winter sample does not justify a non-refundable bet
  • Re-read the Climate Prediction Center's monthly update before committing to anything expensive

Tahoe El Niño questions parents actually ask

Does El Niño really mean more snow at Tahoe?

On the record we have, yes, more than anywhere else in North America. Every Tahoe resort we could measure came in above its own normal across the three strongest El Niño winters, from 106% to 186%. But one of those three, 2015-16, was completely ordinary here, so treat it as improved odds rather than a promise.

Which Tahoe resort gets the most snow?

Of the stations nearest the resorts, Palisades Tahoe has the deepest normal peak snowpack at 43.1 inches of snow water equivalent, with Mt Rose at 37.0 and Homewood at 36.9. Northstar's nearest station is a valley site at 6,500 feet and records much less, which reflects that elevation rather than the resort's upper terrain.

Is a higher resort always snowier in Tahoe?

No, and this surprises people. Across 23 long-running stations around the lake, elevation explains only about a fifth of the variation. Windward position matters more: western stations average roughly 7,100 feet and hold 26.5 inches of normal peak snowpack, while eastern stations average about 8,070 feet and hold 22.3. Lower and west beats higher and east.

Can El Niño make Tahoe worse for a family?

It can. El Niño storms in the Sierra often arrive warm as well as wet, which lifts the rain-snow line. Tahoe's basin is low, around 6,225 feet at the lake, so a storm that is excellent at the summit can be rain at the beginner area where your children actually ski. Base elevation and lower-mountain snowmaking are what protect against that.

Will the roads close?

In a heavy storm cycle, chain controls are routine and outright closures happen. The storms that produce the snow are the storms that shut the passes. Arrive a day before your lessons start, carry chains or know your vehicle's exemption, and check conditions the night before rather than the morning of.

Where do these numbers come from?

From the US Natural Resources Conservation Service's automated snowpack network, using peak snow water equivalent in each water year compared with the median for that same station, most with 47 years of daily record. Where a station sits well away from the resort or its record does not cover a given winter, we say so rather than filling the gap.
