Neither of the two published park codes sets an age gate, and none of the national statutes we read while checking helmet law attaches an age condition either. Your child is eight, or ten, or twelve. They have spent the morning watching a knot of older kids drop into the snowpark off the side of the blue run, and now they want in. You have to decide there and then, standing in a lift queue, with no real idea what the right answer is.
Here is the honest position. Neither of the two published park codes sets a minimum age, and none of the national helmet statutes we read attaches an age condition to park entry. Both codes, the American one and the Swiss one, are codes of behaviour rather than access rules, and they will not make this decision for you. What can make it is a short list of things you can watch your child do in the twenty minutes before you say yes.
And the uncomfortable part, which no sign at a park entrance says out loud: confidence and readiness are not the same thing, and a terrain park is exactly where the gap between them shows up.

It travels with an orange oval sign at the park entrance and a feature size grading running XS, S, M, L, XL.

What Switzerland has is better than the American code on the question you are asking. The guidance issued by SKUS and published to the public by BFU sets out four rules for snowpark behaviour: inspect every element for height, length and difficulty before riding it; plan your line and concentrate throughout the run; start with tricks and elements you already know and progress gradually; and make sure the landing zones are clear, communicating with other riders. The German text is blunt about the inspection step, telling riders to assess Höhe, Länge und Schwierigkeitsgrad, height, length and degree of difficulty, on every element.
Crucially, the Swiss framework also grades features XS through XL, points children under 6 toward XS elements, and tells beginners to start on the S-Line. That is the only age-linked park guidance we found from an official body anywhere.
Suva, Switzerland's national accident insurance institution, publishes the FIS rules alongside snowpark conduct advice and recommends a helmet, a back protector and wrist guards for park use. Its advice before you go anywhere near a feature is to get a feel for the piste first, fahre dich auf der Piste ein. Note that Suva's own park advice has no children-specific section. The age-linked steer, under-6s toward XS elements, comes from the SKUS and BFU material and not from the national accident insurer.
France and Austria have no comparable national park document at all. What exists there is the FIS ten rules, which are general piste conduct rather than park conduct, plus whatever the individual resort has put on its own park signage. If you are skiing France or Austria, the sign at the park entrance is the code.
No published body sets a readiness standard for a child entering a terrain park. We have said that plainly above, and we are not going to dress our own framework up as somebody else's rule. What follows is a test built out of what the two codes do say, plus one question they do not ask and should.
Run it honestly. Three yeses and two maybes is a no.

Sourcing and hedges, because a wrong number here is worse than no number. The Italian entry comes from the Chamber of Deputies' own legislative summary of D.L. 96/2025, corroborated across six or more independent Italian outlets with consistent decree number, date and penalties; we did not open the raw Gazzetta Ufficiale text. The Austrian entry comes from a summary published by the Österreichischer Touristenklub and corroborated by two further Austrian sources, not from the nine state statutes directly. The French entry comes from French ski trade press rather than a direct check of Légifrance, so treat it as moderate confidence.
All of it is current as of August 2026, before the 2026/27 season opens. Helmet law is the single most likely thing on this page to change, and France has already attempted a bill once. Check again before you travel.

Injured park users were younger on average, mean 20.5 years against 27.2, and were more likely to be male, on a snowboard, self-rated as expert, and riding equipment they owned. That study period closed more than twenty years ago. Treat it as a baseline, not as a description of a park built last summer.
Russell and colleagues, University of Calgary, published 2013 and in print 2014: a case-control study at a single Alberta terrain park across two seasons around 2010 to 2012, snowboarders only. Taking rails as the reference, the odds ratio was 9.63 for half-pipe (4.80 to 19.32), 4.29 for jumps (2.72 to 6.76), 2.30 for mushrooms and 1.99 for kickers. One park, two seasons, that park's build quality and grooming. It is a strong signal about feature type and not a law of physics that transfers to every park.
Dickson, University of Canberra, Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, published 16 February 2024, and the largest recent dataset we found: 28 western Canadian resorts, the 2008/09 through 2017/18 seasons, 11,940 injuries meeting the inclusion criteria. 86.5 percent of the injured were under 25 and 73 percent were snowboarders, which is the age skew problem in one line. End-of-day tiredness and fading light are the obvious explanation, but the study does not offer one and neither will we.
The Canadian Paediatric Society, in its 2012 position statement on skiing and snowboarding injury prevention, accepted that terrain park injuries are more severe than piste injuries and then explicitly declined to set an age-based recommendation for park access, calling for more research instead. The professional body most likely to have drawn that line looked at the evidence and chose not to. That is not a gap in our research. That is the state of the field.
Put those studies side by side and a shape appears, with a caveat you need to keep hold of: none of these datasets is describing children under 12. They are describing teenagers and young adults, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Within that population, the people getting hurt in parks are not obviously the timid ones. In Brooks, the park-injured were more likely than the piste-injured to be self-rated experts riding their own equipment. In Dickson, day ticket holders were more likely to be injured in their first two runs of the day than season pass holders. Neither study offers a mechanism for its own finding, and we will not invent one.
Here is our judgement, offered as judgement and not as a finding. In a terrain park a child's confidence grows faster than their ability to abort a bad approach. Six clean runs over a small feature teaches a child that they can do this, which is true, and quietly teaches them that the next feature along is the same thing, which is not. The progression the codes describe, start small, work your way up, start with known elements, exists precisely because that gap opens on its own.
Which is why the two questions that actually matter after the first day are not "did they land it?" They are: did they look, every time? And did they stop where they said they would stop?
If you have a teenager rather than a young child, the age skew in this research is pointing straight at them, and the helmet-use gap in McLoughlin is stark: 51.6 percent in the 14 to 17 group against 76.5 percent in the 10 to 13 group.
