SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser-Brixental is not one resort. It is nine villages (Söll, Ellmau, Going, Scheffau, Brixen im Thale, Westendorf, Itter, Hopfgarten and Kelchsau) sharing 275 km of connected pistes and a single lift pass. For families that structure matters more than the headline number: you choose the village that fits your kids, and the same ski area comes with it.
Our picks are Ellmau and Scheffau. Ellmau has the deepest ski school bench plus Ellmi's beginner carpets and kids club at 1,550 m on top of the Hartkaiserbahn. Scheffau is quieter and puts KinderKaiserland, widely rated one of the best designed children's areas in Austria, at 1,650 m right at the gondola top station. Söll is the loudest and usually the cheapest of the three, and we cover it separately on our Söll page.
Perfect if you have kids roughly 2 to 12, you want a properly big ski area without hard terrain, and at least one child born in 2021 or later. Those kids ski free for the whole 2026-27 season.
Skip if you are chasing altitude and snow certainty, or you have teenagers who want steeps. The lowest valley station is listed at 620 m and only about 14% of the pistes are rated black.

SkiWelt publishes FamilySkiWeeks as kids ski free on 3 to 14 day passes in low season. Confirm the exact qualifying dates and the child-per-adult terms when you book, because that EUR 744.00 figure depends on them.
That is EUR 497 of difference on lift passes alone between the worst and best week to go, before a single other booking. And if either child had been born in 2021 or later, their pass would be free in any week.
Two children in a 5-day beginner group at TOP Skischule Ellmau comes to EUR 590 on the most recently published rates. At Skischule Scheffau, 5 days for two children was EUR 530 on last published 2025-26 pricing. Add lunch supervision: EUR 23 a meal at Scheffau over four days for two children is EUR 184, or EUR 15 a day per child at Hartkaiser. That lunch line is the one families forget, and it is the difference between skiing until 3:30pm and stopping at noon.
Lodging is the swing factor and it moves with dates and occupancy. The per-person half-board rates we saw in August 2026 started around EUR 190 in Ellmau and around EUR 137 with breakfast in Scheffau, but those are live booking-engine starting rates, not 2026-27 season tariffs. Your smartest money move: book the first two weeks of December or the second half of March. **Honest Tradeoff:**The altitude is the real compromise. The valley stations sit low, with the lowest listed at 620 m, and the top of the area at 1,869 m. Snowmaking is extensive and the area is among the most heavily snowmade in Austria, so the pistes usually hold up. But in a warm week the bottom third gets slushy by afternoon and the walk from lift to hotel can be over grass. If snow certainty is your top criterion, this is not the resort.
The kids' areas are up the mountain, not out the door. Both KinderKaiserland (1,650 m) and Ellmi's (1,550 m) are at gondola top stations. That is good for snow and good for views, and it means every morning starts with a gondola ride in ski boots with a small person and their gear. Non-skiing partners cannot just wander over at 11am to watch.
The small print costs money. The beginner carpets need a paid lift pass. Lunchtime supervision is a separate charge at every ski school we checked. Ellmi's Kids Club is only free for children already enrolled in a Hartkaiser ski school course, subject to space, arranged in advance. 275 km is a marketing number, not a plan. Nine villages linked end to end means the far side of the area is a long day from Ellmau or Scheffau with children in tow. Treat the size as insurance against boredom and crowding, not as terrain you will actually cover.
Late-season families, read this twice. The main season ends 29 March 2027 and only Ellmau runs on to 4 April 2027. Book Scheffau for the first week of April and you will be looking at closed lifts.
If your priority is the lowest possible price and your kids are past the toddler stage, Söll is the same ski area for less. If you want a real town and your kids already ski blues confidently, Kitzbühel is 20 minutes away.
**Verdict:**Book SkiWelt if you have children between 2 and 12, at least one of them still learning, and you want a big ski area at a price that does not require a second mortgage. Base in Scheffau if your youngest is a toddler and KinderKaiserland is the point of the trip. Base in Ellmau if you want more ski school choice, more restaurants, a village pool and the only sector that runs into April 2027.
Go in low season if you can possibly move your dates. Kids ski free on 3 to 14 day passes under FamilySkiWeeks, and children born in 2021 or later ski free all season regardless. Those two rules are why a week here beats most of the Alps on cost.
Skip it if you need high-altitude snow certainty in January, if your teenagers want serious steep terrain, or if you are travelling at the very start of April and cannot base in Ellmau. And if the only thing driving the decision is budget, look at Söll first: same pass, same 275 km, cheaper beds.
