How Cold Is Too Cold to Ski With Kids?

The frostbite chart every parent has seen was built by testing adults. The National Weather Service says so on its own cold and wind chill safety page, and tells you to be more cautious with children. Here is what that actually means for a six-year-old, and how to make the call at 7am.

You are standing at the window at 7am with a forecast on your phone, trying to work out whether it is fair to put a five-year-old on a chairlift today. Nobody asks this out loud. So here is the answer up front.

The wind chill chart that tells you how fast exposed skin freezes is real, official and worth using. It was also built by testing adult subjects. The National Weather Service says so on its own cold and wind chill safety page, which we read in August 2026, and on that same page it tells you plainly to be more cautious with children.

That one line is the whole article. The widely shared 30, 10 and 5 minute frostbite thresholds rest on testing run on adult subjects, so they are calibrated to adult physiology. They are a ceiling for your six-year-old, not a schedule.

There is no official pediatric temperature limit for skiing. We looked for one. The call is yours, so this guide gives you the numbers, the turn-back signals, and the one thing most parents have backwards.

The short answer

Use wind chill, not air temperature. Wind is what moves the number. At 0°F (-18°C) with a 15 mph (24 km/h) wind, the National Weather Service puts the wind chill at -19°F (-28°C) and says exposed skin can freeze in 30 minutes. A calm morning at the same thermometer reading is a completely different day.

Then treat the chart's minutes as a ceiling. Those bands are calibrated to adult physiology, because the National Weather Service states on its cold and wind chill safety page that the wind chill tests were conducted on adult subjects, and on the same page it advises extra caution with children. So the ladder we use:

  • Wind chill warmer than the chart's flagged bands: a normal day. Cover every gap of exposed skin and go ski.
  • Wind chill in the 30 minute band: short laps with a real indoor break, no exposed skin anywhere, and you check faces at every lift.
  • Wind chill in the 5 minute band: five minutes is shorter than most lift rides. For young children that is a swimming pool day, and calling it is not a failure.

Be clear about what that ladder is and is not. The band values belong to the National Weather Service. The decision to shorten a child's day is ours, and yours. No medical body we could find publishes a ski-specific temperature cut-off for children, so anyone quoting you a hard number is giving you an opinion dressed as a standard.

The chart every parent has seen was built on adults

The chart is the NOAA and National Weather Service wind chill chart, effective since 1 November 2001 and still the standard US reference. It is a grid: air temperature across the top, wind speed down the side, the resulting wind chill in each cell, and colour bands showing how fast exposed skin freezes at 30 minutes, 10 minutes and 5 minutes.

Behind it sits a formula. Wind chill in °F = 35.74 + 0.6215T - 35.75(V^0.16) + 0.4275T(V^0.16), where T is air temperature in °F and V is wind speed in mph. That formula is why a warmer day with more wind can be worse than a colder still one.

Here is the part almost nobody quotes. On the National Weather Service's cold and wind chill safety page, read in August 2026, the agency states that "The tests that were done on wind chill were conducted on adult subjects", and advises readers to "be even more cautious with children, seniors and persons with compromised health". Both sentences are the National Weather Service's own words on its own page, not our gloss on them.

Read that again with a six-year-old in mind. The 30 minute figure was not derived from testing on children and then published for parents. It is calibrated to adult physiology with a written warning attached, and most parents never see the warning, because the chart travels around the internet as an image while the caveat stays behind on the safety page.

One note on geography. This is the North American chart, and it is the version we can trace to a first-party document, so it is the one we use here. European forecasts do not always publish wind chill the same way. Moving air stripping heat off a cheek works identically on both sides of the Atlantic; what varies is whether your weather app shows you the number.

What that table does not cover

Those cells are read directly off the official chart, and the freeze times are the chart's own bands for adult subjects. The full grid runs to roughly 234 cells, so if your conditions are not one of these four, pull the National Weather Service chart itself rather than interpolating. The freeze-time bands move as a gradient across that grid, and we are not going to guess where the lines fall in a cell we have not read. Four things the table cannot tell you, and they matter more than the cells.

It describes exposed skin, and nothing else. Which makes the practical job simple: have no exposed skin. On a child that means four specific places. The strip of forehead between goggle top and helmet rim. The cheeks and nose bridge if the goggles sit low. The wrists, where a jacket cuff rides up above a glove on the lift bar. And the back of the neck when the collar sits below the helmet.

It does not describe wet. A soaked glove liner or a damp base layer is a different problem entirely, one the chart has nothing to say about, and it is the far more common way a family morning ends early.

It does not include the wind you make. Forecast wind is the wind standing still. Skiing downhill and riding an exposed chair both add airflow on top of whatever the forecast says.

And it is calibrated to adults. Third mention, deliberately, and it is the National Weather Service saying it rather than us. The next two sections are why that gap is wider than it sounds.

Why a child runs out of heat faster than you do

The physiology is not complicated and it is not disputed.

Children have more surface area for their body mass. A small body has proportionally more skin to lose heat through and less mass to hold it. Pediatric medicine treats this as the main reason children cool faster than adults. We could not tie the exact wording to a single primary text we independently re-read, so take it as well-established background rather than a quotable statistic.

Young children shiver less effectively. The same pediatric literature describes infants and young children generating less heat by shivering than an adult would, and instead reducing blood flow to hands and feet. Which is exactly where your child's mittens are.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is blunt about the timeline. On hypothermia in children, its cold weather safety guidance states "It can occur more quickly in children than in adults", and describes the progression: the child "may shiver and become lethargic and clumsy", with speech becoming slurred and body temperature declining in more severe cases.

The AAP also supplies the single most useful dressing rule in this guide, and it costs nothing: put a child in one more layer than an adult would wear in the same conditions.

Your child is not the sensor. You are.

This is the part parents get backwards, and it is why a chart on its own will not keep a child safe.

The UIAA, the international mountaineering and climbing federation, states in its medical commission's consensus statement on children in the mountains that "young children are generally poor at communicating their physiological discomfort". Specifically, they are unlikely to tell you they are dangerously cold or that they cannot feel their fingers, even when they have the language to do it. What they do instead, in the statement's own words: "They would probably just become very quiet and still."

Sit with that on a chairlift. The child who is loudly complaining about the cold is broadly fine. The child who has gone quiet, stopped asking questions and stopped wriggling is the one to look at. Your instinct will do the opposite of this, because complaining demands attention and silence does not.

Two honest caveats on that source. It is a statement about children at altitude rather than a cold weather document, though the observation is about children reporting physical discomfort in general and it names not being able to feel their fingers. And it was published in 2008. The UIAA's working group has been preparing an update, which had not been published as of August 2026, so check for a newer version before treating the 2008 wording as final.

That statement is useful for one more thing. It treats children from age 8 upwards as presenting symptoms much as adults do, and flags roughly ages 3 to 8 as the band where children are often poor at describing what is wrong. That banding is about altitude illness, not cold, so we use it only as a rough line for how much weight to put on "I'm fine" from a small child.

Pro tip: at the top of every lift, ask something that cannot be answered with yes. "Which finger is coldest?" gets you information. "Are you warm enough?" gets you a nod from a child who wants another run.

What to check before you leave the apartment

Get the wind speed, not just the temperature

Two numbers, every time. The temperature alone cannot tell you which band you are in, because at 0°F a 15 mph wind puts you in the 30 minute frostbite band. Note the gust figure as well, since gusts are what hit an exposed traverse or a ridge-line chair.

Find out which altitude that number describes

A resort is not one temperature. Winter Park, the one US resort whose own mountain statistics page we could read directly, has a base at 9,000 ft (2,743 m) and a summit at 12,060 ft (3,676 m). That is a 3,060 ft gap between the village where the reading was taken and the ridge where your child will be sitting on a chair with the wind on their face. Look for a summit reading before you commit to the top of the mountain, and if there is only one number, assume it is the friendly one. Audit the gaps before the boots go on

Goggle to helmet, cuff to glove, collar to helmet, and the strip under the chin. Do this in the apartment while everyone is warm and standing still. A cold car park is the worst possible place to discover that the goggle strap sits above the helmet edge and leaves a band of bare forehead.

Neck gaiter, never a scarf

Standard ski area lift safety guidance warns that loose items including scarves, pole straps and long hair can catch on a lift. A tube gaiter or a balaclava does the identical warming job with nothing hanging. Worth knowing that the safer option here is also the cheaper one.

One more layer on the child than on you

This is the American Academy of Pediatrics' own cold weather recommendation, and it is worth more than most of what you will be sold in a gear shop. A well-layered child in mid-priced kit does better than a badly layered child in a premium shell.

Spares in your pack, not in the room

Dry gloves and dry socks, carried. A wet glove at 10am ends the day unless there is a dry one within arm's reach, and wet is the failure mode the wind chill chart says nothing about.

Decide your bail-out before you need it

Name the specific indoor place you will retreat to and the time you will check in. Making that decision at 7am in a warm kitchen is a completely different decision from making it at 11am with a cold child, a lift queue and a lesson you already paid for.

They go quiet

The UIAA statement is explicit that young children who are physically uncomfortable tend to become very quiet and still rather than say so. Treat a child who has stopped chatting on the lift as a reading on an instrument, not as a child finally settling down.

Shivering

The AAP lists shivering among the signs as hypothermia sets in. Read it as your cue to go inside, not as something to push one more run through.

Clumsy

The AAP pairs lethargy with clumsiness in that same progression. A child who is suddenly falling on terrain they handled comfortably an hour ago is not just tired.

The complaining stops

The AAP describes frostbitten skin as either burning or gone numb. A child who said their fingers hurt and now says nothing has not necessarily improved. Numbness is one of the signs, not the recovery. Look at the skin rather than trusting the silence.

Pale, grey or blistered skin

The AAP describes frostbite most often affecting fingers, toes, ears and nose, with the skin turning pale, grey and blistered. That is a ski patrol conversation, not a hot chocolate conversation.

Slurred speech

The AAP places slurred speech and a falling body temperature in the more severe cases. This is the late signal. Get ski patrol involved immediately rather than managing it yourself.

Warming a cold child, and where our advice stops

The logistics first, because those are yours to run.

  • Out of the wind and properly indoors, not into a covered lift queue. A queue with a roof is still weather.
  • Wet layers off. A damp base layer keeps pulling heat out of a child who is sitting in a warm restaurant looking fine.
  • Sit down and give it real time. Then look at the skin again before anyone decides anything about the afternoon. "They say they're fine now" is the weakest evidence available to you, for every reason above.
  • Warm drink, dry hat, extra layer. The unglamorous version is the version that works.

Now the line we are not crossing. We are not going to give you rewarming techniques, water temperatures or medicine doses. Those are a clinician's call and a ski patrol's call, and getting them wrong on a page read by thousands of families is worse than saying nothing. This guide is information, not medical advice.

Call ski patrol or seek medical care for skin that is pale, grey or blistered, numbness that does not resolve once the child is warm and dry, shivering that will not stop, confusion, or slurred speech. Patrol is already on the mountain and this is what they are there for. Asking early is the cheap version of this decision.

What does not matter, and the part nobody says out loud

The lifts spinning is not a safety signal. Resorts close lifts for high wind because of what wind does to a lift. We looked for a common industry threshold at which ski areas close for cold and could not source one. Assume the mountain will be open on the coldest morning of your week, and that nobody is going to make this decision on your behalf.

The expensive jacket is not the variable. The AAP's guidance is about layers, and about one more of them on the child than on you. Dry spares in a backpack beat a premium shell with nothing behind it.

A cold day is not automatically a dangerous day. At 0°F (-18°C) with a 15 mph (24 km/h) wind, the National Weather Service says exposed skin can freeze in 30 minutes. Exposed. Covered skin is a different question, and covering skin is a solvable problem you can fix in a hallway in four minutes with a balaclava and a longer cuff.

Real talk, and this is our judgement rather than a statistic: the outcome we would actually bet on for a family pushing through a bitter morning is not frostbite. It is a child who spends four hours miserable and quietly files skiing under things that hurt. That is the expensive one, because it costs you the next ten years of trips rather than one afternoon.

The half day exists. Book the morning lesson, take the afternoon off, and nobody has to be brave about it. The cold morning decision, in order

  • Check air temperature AND wind speed, including the gust figure, not just the headline temperature.
  • Work out the wind chill and find which National Weather Service band it falls into before you decide anything.
  • Remember the bands are adult figures. The National Weather Service states the wind chill tests were conducted on adult subjects and advises being more cautious with children.
  • If the chart flags any frostbite time at all, plan short laps with indoor breaks rather than a full day.
  • If the chart says 5 minutes, that is shorter than most lift rides. Make it an indoor day for young children.
  • Find a summit reading, not just the base village number, before committing to the top of the mountain.
  • Close every gap: goggle to helmet, cuff to glove, collar to neck, and under the chin.
  • Neck gaiter or balaclava, never a scarf, and take backpacks off before loading a lift.
  • One more layer on the child than you are wearing yourself.
  • Dry spare gloves and socks in your pack, not back at the apartment.
  • Name the indoor place you will retreat to and the time you will check in, before you leave.
  • Look at your child's face at every single lift. You are the sensor, not them.
  • Ask a question that cannot be answered with yes at the top of each lift.
  • If they go quiet, go in. Do not negotiate one more run with a quiet child.
  • Pale, grey or blistered skin, numbness, unstoppable shivering, confusion or slurred speech: ski patrol, now.

Cold weather questions parents actually search

What temperature is too cold to ski with a 5 year old?
There is no official pediatric cut-off, and we could not find one published by any medical body. Work from wind chill rather than air temperature. No. Wind chill is a calculated value describing how fast moving air strips heat from exposed skin. We are not going to tell you the two mornings carry an identical freeze time, because we can only source the frostbite band for the first of them. What the pair does show is that the thermometer on its own is not the number to plan around.
Do ski resorts close when it is too cold?
Do not count on it. Lifts do close for high wind, but that decision is about the lift rather than about your child, and we could not source a common industry temperature at which ski areas close for cold. Plan on the mountain being open and the call being yours. The lifts running is not a signal that conditions are appropriate for a five-year-old.
How do I know if my child has frostbite?
The American Academy of Pediatrics describes frostbite as most often affecting the fingers, toes, ears and nose, with skin turning pale, grey and blistered, and the child reporting that the skin burns or has gone numb.
