Stubai Glacier
Book Stubai if your kids are under 10 and you want glacier skiing at the best price in Austria. Stay in Neustift (a real village with restaurants) and take the glacier gondola up each morning. The BIG Family area at the glacier handles beginners from age 3. If your kids are over 10, the free-skiing benefit disappears and Hintertux becomes the comparison for year-round glacier access. If you want a non-glacier alternative with similar value, Schlick 2000 is next door in the same valley.

Ist Stubai Glacier gut für Familien?
Stubai Glacier is the family glacier. Kids under 10 ski completely free, no strings attached. Austria's largest glacier ski area has reliable snow, a dedicated kids' zone at altitude, and terrain that ranges from gentle blues to serious off-piste. It's 20 minutes from Innsbruck, which means easy access and the option of city-based accommodation. For value on glacier skiing, nothing else in Austria comes close.

Biggest tradeoff
Wie ist das Skifahren für Familien?
Your kid will ski on a real glacier at 3,000 meters, and they will remember it forever. Stubai is not a huge resort, but it is one where a five-year-old can stand on top of the Alps, look out over an endless white landscape, and feel like they have conquered the world. That feeling is worth the trip.
The BIG Family Ski Camp at the Gamsgarten mid-station (2,620m) is the centerpiece. It includes a dedicated children's area with magic carpets, a training course, and an adventure trail. Kids from age 3 can join group lessons here, learning on gentle slopes with panoramic views that make even the bunny slope feel epic.
Terrain Layout
- Beginner: 20% of terrain, concentrated around Gamsgarten and the Eisgrat area
- Intermediate: 55% of terrain, long groomed runs from the top stations back to Gamsgarten
- Advanced: 25% of terrain, including off-piste options on the glacier
- Altitude: 1,750m to 3,210m, guaranteeing snow from October through June
The 10km run from the top of the Schaufeljoch down to the valley station is the kind of long, sweeping cruise that gives intermediate kids a genuine sense of achievement. They will ski it twice and want to go again.
Ski School
The Stubai Ski School operates from the BIG Family area at Gamsgarten. Lessons start at age 3 with small groups. A full day (10am to 3pm) runs around EUR 65-80 per child including lunch supervision. Private lessons cost roughly EUR 60 per hour.
The glacier environment means conditions can change fast. Instructors are experienced with altitude and weather management, and lessons move indoors or to sheltered areas when visibility drops. Bring sunscreen rated SPF 50+ since the UV at 3,000m is intense, even on cloudy days.
On-Mountain Dining
The Jochdohle at 3,150m is Austria's highest restaurant, and your kids will eat schnitzel while looking at mountains stretching to Italy. The Gamsgarten restaurant at the mid-station is the family hub, with a sun terrace, self-service section, and kid-friendly menu. Expect to pay EUR 10-15 for a children's meal.

Was kosten die Liftpässe?
You get glacier-guaranteed snow and high-altitude terrain for less than most Austrian destination resorts. Adult day passes run approximately EUR 62-68 depending on season. Children aged 6-18 (born 2007-2019) pay roughly half the adult rate. Kids under 6 ski free when accompanied by a parent.
- Family discount: When buying for 2 adults + 1 child simultaneously, the child's pass is further reduced
- Multi-day passes: 3-day adult pass roughly EUR 170-185, representing about 10% savings over daily rates
- Season pass: Around EUR 750-850 for adults, worth considering if you plan 12+ days
Stubai Glacier operates independently and is not on the Tirol Super Ski Pass for daily tickets, though it is included in some season pass combinations. No Ikon or Epic affiliation.
The BIG Family program includes free use of the children's practice area at Gamsgarten, so beginners who stay in the learning zone do not need a full lift pass. Buy the pass when your child is ready to ride the gondola to higher terrain.
The real value play: combine Stubai Glacier with the Schlick 2000 ski area in the same valley. A joint pass covers both areas and adds variety without a long drive. Schlick 2000 has excellent beginner terrain at lower altitude, making it a good warm-up day before hitting the glacier.
Planning Your Trip
🏠Wo sollte eure Familie übernachten?
Book a guesthouse or apartment in Neustift im Stubaital, the main village 20 minutes from the glacier base station. The village has everything a family needs: supermarkets, restaurants, a pharmacy, and a swimming pool, plus that distinctly Austrian Tyrolean character that makes you feel like you are somewhere special.
- Pension/Gasthof (guesthouse): EUR 80-150/night for a family room with breakfast included. The personal touch of family-run properties means owners remember your kids' names.
- Apartments: EUR 100-200/night for a 2-bedroom unit with kitchen. Self-catering saves significantly over restaurant dining.
- Hotel Jagdhof: The valley's luxury option with a spa, pool, and kids' club. A splurge, but the indoor pool and playroom keep non-skiing hours occupied.
A free ski bus runs between Neustift and the Stubai Glacier base station every 15-30 minutes. Driving takes 20 minutes, and parking at the glacier base is free. If your family prefers to ski different areas on different days, a car gives you access to Schlick 2000 and the Serles lifts without depending on bus schedules.
For families who want to be closer to the lifts, a handful of properties in Mutterberg (at the glacier base station) offer walk-to-lifts convenience. Options are limited and book early.
✈️Wie kommt ihr nach Stubai Glacier?
Ninety minutes from Innsbruck Airport and you are in the Stubai Valley. The drive is highway most of the way, with no mountain passes or switchbacks. For families connecting through Munich, add another 90 minutes. This is one of the easiest glacier ski areas to reach in the Alps.
- Innsbruck Airport (INN): 45 minutes to Neustift, 1 hour to glacier base. Direct flights from London, Amsterdam, Vienna, and several German cities.
- Munich Airport (MUC): 2.5 hours to Neustift. Better flight connections worldwide, autobahn most of the way.
- Transfer options: Shared shuttles from Innsbruck run EUR 30-50 per person. Private transfers EUR 120-180 for the car.
You will want a rental car if flying into Munich. From Innsbruck, you can manage without one since the free ski bus connects Neustift to the glacier reliably. Snow tires are legally required in Austria from November 1 to April 15.
The Brenner motorway (A13) passes through the valley entrance, making the Stubai Valley a natural stop for families driving from Germany or northern Italy. Toll stickers (Vignette) are required for Austrian motorways and cost approximately EUR 10 for a 10-day pass.

☕Was gibt's abseits der Piste?
By 4pm your kids will be splashing in the StuBay leisure center in Telfes, a swimming pool complex with water slides, a toddler pool, and sauna areas for parents. The post-ski swim is the daily reward that keeps kids motivated through afternoon lessons.
The Stubai Valley offers more off-mountain activities than you might expect from a glacier ski area:
- StuBay leisure center: Pool, slides, and wellness. Entry roughly EUR 8-12 for adults, less for children.
- Tobogganing: The 10km natural toboggan run from Elfer mountain is one of the longest in Austria. Open evenings with floodlights on certain days. Toboggan rental available at the base.
- Ice skating: Outdoor rinks in Neustift during winter season
- Winter hiking: Cleared paths through the valley for stroller-friendly walks
Dining
Neustift has a solid selection of family restaurants:
- Traditional Gasthofs: Schnitzel, Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancake with plum sauce), and Knodel dumplings. Kids' menus available. Expect EUR 8-12 for a children's main course.
- Pizzerias: Multiple options in the village. Reliable kid pleasers.
- Supermarkets: Spar and MPreis for self-catering supplies.
The valley atmosphere is authentically Tyrolean. No manufactured resort village, just a real Austrian community that happens to have a glacier ski area at the end of the road. Your kids will hear cowbells, see traditional wooden chalets, and eat food made by families who have lived here for generations.

💬Was sagen andere Eltern?
"My five-year-old told everyone at school she skied on top of the Alps." The altitude is not just a snow guarantee. It is a story your child will tell for years, and that narrative power shows up in every parent review of Stubai Glacier.
What Parents Love
- Snow reliability: "We went in April and conditions were perfect." The glacier guarantees snow from October to June, eliminating the anxiety of booking a ski trip months in advance.
- BIG Family area: "The children's area at Gamsgarten is fantastic. Gentle slopes, magic carpets, and the instructors are patient." Multiple parents cite this as the reason they chose Stubai over larger Tyrolean resorts.
- Value: "Less expensive than St. Anton or the SkiWelt, and the snow is better." Parents notice the price difference, especially on multi-day passes.
The Honest Gaps
- Limited terrain variety: "After three days, we had skied everything." Stubai is not a mega-resort. Families staying a full week may want to add Schlick 2000 or a day trip to the Innsbruck-area resorts for variety.
- Altitude effects: "Our three-year-old got a headache on the first day." The glacier stations sit above 2,600m. Hydration and sun protection matter. Allow a gentle first day for acclimatization.
- Not much at the base: "There is nothing at Mutterberg except the gondola station." The nightlife and village atmosphere is in Neustift, 20 minutes down the valley.
Parents choose Stubai Glacier when they want guaranteed snow, manageable scale, and a genuine Austrian valley experience without the crowds and prices of the bigger-name Tyrolean resorts. It is the glacier equivalent of a neighborhood restaurant: not the flashiest, but consistent, honest, and welcoming.

Unser Fazit
Würden wir Stubai Glacier empfehlen?
Was es wirklich kostet
Adult day passes around EUR 41, kids under 10 free. That makes Stubai the best-value glacier skiing in Austria by a wide margin. Compare to Hintertux at EUR 79/adult or Solden at EUR 83, and a family of four saves EUR 80-100/day on lift tickets alone. Budget around EUR 300-350/day for a family with young kids. Your smartest money move: kids under 10 free. Period. If you have two children aged 4 and 8, your family's total lift cost is just two adult passes. No other glacier in Austria does this.
Worauf ihr achten müsst
Glacier skiing means altitude, cold, and weather exposure. Kids under 5 may find the conditions uncomfortable on windy days. If guaranteed snow without glacier conditions is your priority, Obergurgl or Obertauern deliver snow reliability at lower, warmer altitudes. The valley floor skiing at Stubai (Schlick 2000, Serlesbahnen) is small and separate from the glacier, so on bad glacier days, your options are limited.
If this resort is not the right fit for your family, consider Hintertux Glacier for a longer season and year-round glacier skiing.
