It is August 2026, which puts you roughly six months out from the February 2027 holiday weeks and about four months out from Christmas. That is a good place to be standing. The cheapest season pass windows have already closed, but the two decisions that actually set a family ski budget, which week you go and which bed you sleep in, are still completely yours.

This is a timeline, not a countdown clock. Below: what to lock in each month between now and December, which school holidays collide in 2026-27 (the answer is messier than most sites admit), what the pass deadlines actually were, and how tour operator and flight windows tend to behave. Where a figure is reported rather than confirmed on the source's own site, we say so plainly. Confirm every price and date on the official page before you pay anything.

Your month-by-month booking timeline

1

August 2026: pick the week before you pick the resort

Start with the calendar, not the brochure. Look up your own school's published 2026-27 dates, because in England half-term is set locally and February 2027 splits across two different weeks. Then make the single biggest call of the whole trip: are you going inside the peak fortnight, or dodging it? Everything downstream depends on that answer. Set a total budget, shortlist three resorts rather than falling for one, and start watching accommodation in all three.

2

September 2026: book the bed and the ski school

These are the two things that run out by week rather than simply getting pricier. Children's ski school in a popular family resort, particularly group classes for the 4 to 8 age range in a peak week, is the classic thing families discover is full when they finally look in December. Book accommodation on the most flexible cancellation terms you can get, then book ski school directly with the school rather than assuming your hotel or operator has it covered.

3

October 2026: flights, transfers, passports

General airfare research (not ski specific, see the flights section below) recommends booking peak-period international trips several months ahead, which puts October comfortably in range for February. Book the transfer at the same time, because a private minibus for a family often beats a shared shuttle on a peak Saturday once you count the waiting. And check every passport's expiry and issue date against the current entry rules for your destination. Children's passports run short, and this is the most avoidable way to lose a trip.

4

November 2026: lift passes, gear, insurance

Buying the area's multi-day pass on the resort's own site before you travel is usually cheaper than the ticket window and skips the queue on arrival. Reserve rental gear online while the good kit in children's sizes is still there. Buy travel insurance that explicitly covers winter sports, because plenty of standard policies exclude it, and buy it when the trip is paid for rather than the week before you fly. Check helmets and goggles still fit the kids from last year.

5

December 2026: confirm, then watch for released inventory

Reconfirm ski school times and meeting points, transfer pickup details, and how you collect lift passes. If you are still unbooked for February, this is the month to look daily rather than weekly: hotels and operators do release unsold peak rooms as balance-payment deadlines pass. Read early-season snow reports for context, not panic, especially in areas with real altitude.

6

January 2027 and later: the late booking game

If your February is still open, be flexible about the resort rather than the week. The peak fortnight rarely gets cheaper as it approaches; what improves your odds is willingness to take a different village, a Sunday to Sunday stay, or a smaller ski area next door to the famous one. Late deals are real, but they reward families who can move.

Season pass deadlines: what already closed, and what that leaves you

If North America is on your list, the cheap pass window for 2026-27 shut months ago. Both big multi-resort passes price in tiers across the year, and the lowest tier is a spring purchase.

  • Epic Pass (2026-27): ski press reported the lowest-price deadline as 25 May 2026, with the full Epic Pass at $1,089 and Epic Local at $809 before it, and Gen Z pricing (ages 13 to 30) at $869 and $649. After that deadline the same reports had Epic rising $30 to $1,119 and Epic Local rising $20 to $829. These are figures from ski media rather than a reading of the pass checkout itself, so confirm the live price before you buy.
  • Ikon Pass (2026-27): went on sale 12 March 2026, with a reported starting price of $1,399 for the full pass, $949 for Ikon Base, and Session passes from $299. The lowest-price deadline was set for midnight on 17 April 2026 and was extended to 19 April 2026 after technical problems, taking the tier-one renewal perks with it.
  • Real talk on those Ikon numbers: a later report described Ikon pricing as holding flat through the summer and quoted a different top figure ($1,349) than the $1,399 reported at launch. That is roughly what tiered pricing looks like from the outside, and we could not reconcile the exact tier boundaries. Treat any Ikon dollar figure you read anywhere, including here, as reported as of that date, and check the pass site for what you would actually pay today.
  • Europe is a different game: for a one-week family trip to the Alps, the purchase that matters is usually the local area's six-day pass bought on the resort's own site before you travel, not a multi-resort North American pass. Many European areas and pass networks run their own pre-season or early-booking online pricing, but we have not verified the 2026-27 windows area by area. Check the specific area's pricing page rather than assuming a deadline exists, or that it has passed.
What the price is now: we read Ikon's own published product data on 17 August 2026 and the full Ikon Pass is $1,449 for an adult aged 23 and over, with Ikon Base at $1,019, a child aged 5 to 12 at $449 full or $299 Base, and a stated price-valid-until date of 8 October 2026.

The 2026-27 school holiday collision map

Every family ski price spike traces back to a school calendar. The catch is that "the February holidays" is not one week, and in England it is not even one date. Here is what the 2026-27 calendars look like, with the honest confidence level attached to each.

  • UK February half-term 2027 splits across two weeks. England has no national school holiday calendar. Each of 150 plus local authorities sets its own dates, and academies and private schools set theirs individually on top of that. For February 2027, some authorities run Monday 8 to Friday 12 February and others run Monday 15 to Friday 19 February (Greenwich and Luton are confirmed on the later week). The practical consequence is that British demand in the Alps does not spike for one week, it spreads across the fortnight of 8 to 19 February. Your first job is to look up your own authority's published dates. We go deeper on that fortnight in the February half-term 2027 guide.
  • Other UK dates (illustrative, locally set). October half-term 2026 clusters tightly at Monday 26 to Friday 30 October across most of England. Christmas 2026 typically breaks around 18 to 21 December with a return around 4 to 6 January 2027. Easter 2027 runs roughly Friday 26 March to Friday 9 April on one London authority's published calendar. All of these vary by authority, so treat them as the shape of the year rather than your dates.
  • France staggers February by zone, and Christmas not at all. On the official calendar, all three zones finish on Saturday 19 December 2026 and return Monday 4 January 2027. For the vacances d'hiver, Zone C (including Paris, Creteil, Versailles, Toulouse, Montpellier) is first out this cycle, finishing Saturday 6 February and returning Monday 22 February 2027. Zone B (including Nice, Lille, Nantes, Rennes, Strasbourg, Aix-Marseille) is last, finishing Saturday 20 February and returning Monday 8 March 2027. Zone C going first matters, because the largest zone, Paris included, hits the Alps at the front of the cycle instead of the back. The French school holiday zones guide maps this onto resort choice.
  • Zone A needs one more check before you book around it. The zone calendar we used puts Zone A (including Lyon, Bordeaux, Grenoble, Besancon) at Saturday 13 February to Monday 1 March 2027, which fits the clean one-week stagger across the three zones. A secondary French news summary gave roughly 7 to 23 February instead, a full week different, and the education ministry's own page would not load for us. If your plan depends on Zone A dates specifically, verify them on education.gouv.fr before you pay a deposit.
  • Germany varies by Bundesland, and only two are checked here. A holiday calendar aggregator lists Bavaria at 24 December 2026 to 8 January 2027 and North Rhine-Westphalia at 23 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, plus a short Bavarian winter break at 8 to 12 February 2027 tied to Fasching. We could not cross-check either against those states' own ministry pages, so treat them as indicative rather than settled. Whether NRW has a distinct February break at all was not confirmed in our research. The German school holidays by state guide covers the wider picture.
  • US Presidents Day is Monday 15 February 2027. This one is settled. The federal holiday falls on the third Monday in February by statute, so it is not subject to announcement or revision. It drives a long weekend and often a full week spike at North American resorts, and it pulls American families into European resorts in the same window.

Stack those calendars and February 2027 reads as a loaded fortnight rather than one bad week. The week of 8 February brings the earlier branch of English half-term, French Zone C's first week, and, on the dates we have, Bavaria's short break. The week of 15 February brings the later branch of English half-term, Zone C's second week, Presidents Day on the Monday, and the start of Zone A. On those dates the second week looks like the more crowded of the two, though the Zone A uncertainty above is exactly the sort of thing that could shift that read. If you have any flexibility at all, January and the weeks from mid-March are where the same resorts get cheaper and quieter.

Tour operator windows: read them as patterns, not promises

Package operators run to a fairly predictable rhythm. A winter programme goes on sale roughly a year ahead, the deepest early-booking discounts sit in the opening days or weeks of that launch, and what survives into late summer is availability plus deposit and flexibility terms. Two examples below, both of which we could only source from trade coverage and partner pages, because the operators' own sites blocked our checks.

  • Crystal Ski Holidays (UK): coverage of the 2026/27 programme launch described a low deposit of 100 pounds per person, fee-free changes up to 12 weeks before departure, and a buy one lift pass, get one free offer on European ski holidays departing before April 2027. Crystal's own pages would not load for our check, so confirm the deposit, the change window, and the lift pass terms directly with them before building a plan on them.
  • Club Med: global early-booking sales for winter 2026/27 were reported to open on 3 February 2026, with up to 20 percent off in the first four days. A Japan "Super Early Bird" of up to 30 percent reportedly ran to 12 February 2026, and Canadian resorts required booking by 10 March 2026 for early terms. Those percentages come from partner and regional pages rather than a confirmed read of Club Med's own site, so treat them as the shape of the offer rather than exact figures.

What that means standing here in August: the headline early-booking discounts for 2026-27 have generally been and gone. What you are shopping for now is availability in the week you actually need, a deposit small enough that committing does not hurt, and a change policy that lets you move if life happens. Ask about all three explicitly before you book, since they vary more between operators than the headline price does. And note the pattern for next time. If you want the deepest package discount on winter 2027-28, the window to watch tends to open around February 2027.

Flights: a rule of thumb, and an honest caveat

We went looking for booking-window data specific to ski gateways like Geneva, Zurich, Munich, Innsbruck, Denver, and Salt Lake City. It does not exist in any credible published form we could find. What does exist is general airfare research across all routes, which is a reasonable proxy and nothing more. Please do not read the numbers below as ski-route facts.

  • The general pattern: aggregate fare research puts the domestic sweet spot around 39 days before departure, with the lowest average fares generally landing somewhere in the 23 to 51 day band. For international trips, the lowest average sits around 49 days out, inside a broad 2 to 8 month window.
  • The peak-period adjustment: the same research recommends booking further ahead for peak travel periods, roughly 4 to 10 months out for international trips and 3 to 5 months for domestic. A February half-term flight to the Alps is squarely a peak-period booking, which puts August through October in the sensible range rather than late.
  • What averages hide: a Saturday in half-term into Geneva is not an average flight. On the busiest changeover days the binding constraint is usually four seats together and an arrival time that works for your transfer, not the headline fare. If the schedule matters more than the price, book earlier than the averages suggest.
  • Levers that beat timing: flying midweek, or on the Sunday instead of the Saturday, changes both the fare and the transfer chaos. A second gateway airport can open cheaper seats, as long as you price the longer transfer honestly rather than pretending it is free. And check ski and boot carriage rules and cost per bag before you compare fares, because baggage can close a fare gap fast.

The dates worth writing down

  • Now: look up your own school's or local authority's published 2026-27 term dates. In England, February half-term 2027 splits between 8 to 12 February and 15 to 19 February depending on where you live.
  • Before booking a French resort week: confirm the zone dates on education.gouv.fr. Zone C finishes Saturday 6 February 2027 and Zone B finishes Saturday 20 February. Zone A is listed at 13 February, but one source disagrees by a full week.
  • Mark Monday 15 February 2027: US Presidents Day, and the same week as the later branch of English half-term and the start of French Zone A. Expect the season's heaviest competition around it.
  • Christmas 2026: French classes end Saturday 19 December and return Monday 4 January 2027. Most English authorities break somewhere around 18 to 21 December, but check yours.
  • Epic Pass 2026-27: the lowest-price deadline was reported as 25 May 2026 and has passed. Check current pricing on the pass site rather than assuming any figure.
  • Ikon Pass 2026-27: on sale from 12 March 2026, lowest-price deadline extended to 19 April 2026. Also passed. Verify any dollar figure at the source, because reporting on the later tiers was inconsistent.
  • September 2026: book children's ski school directly, especially group classes for the 4 to 8 age range in a peak week.
  • October 2026: check every passport's expiry and issue date against the current entry rules for your destination.
  • November 2026: confirm your travel insurance actually covers winter sports, and buy pre-season lift passes on the resort's own site.
  • February 2027: if you want the deepest package discount on winter 2027-28, that is roughly when operator early-booking windows tend to open.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is August 2026. Am I too late to book a February 2027 family ski trip?
No. You are too late for the cheapest season pass tiers and the deepest tour operator early-booking discounts, which both closed in spring 2026. You are not late for the things that matter more: your week, your accommodation, ski school places, and flights. Six months out sits inside general guidance for peak-period international flights (roughly 4 to 10 months). The real risk from here is ski school and peak-week family beds selling out, not a price cliff.
When is UK February half-term 2027?
There is no single answer, and that is the point. England has no national school holiday calendar. Some local authorities run Monday 8 to Friday 12 February 2027 and others run Monday 15 to Friday 19 February 2027 (Greenwich and Luton are confirmed on the later week), while academies and private schools set their own dates on top of that. In practice, Alps demand spreads across the whole fortnight of 8 to 19 February. Check your own authority's published dates before you book anything.
Which week of the 2026-27 season will be the busiest?
On the dates we have, the week of 15 February 2027 stacks the most calendars: the later branch of English half-term, French Zone C's second week, the start of Zone A, and US Presidents Day on the Monday. The week of 8 February is not far behind, with the earlier English branch, Zone C's first week, and, on the aggregator dates we have, Bavaria's short winter break. Both are the fortnight to avoid if you have flexibility. One caveat: the French Zone A dates carry a one-week discrepancy between sources, so verify them before you plan around that read.
Did I miss the Epic and Ikon pass deadlines for 2026-27?
For the lowest price tier, yes. Epic's lowest-price deadline was reported as 25 May 2026 ($1,089 full and $809 Local before it, rising to $1,119 and $829 after). Ikon went on sale 12 March 2026 with a lowest-price deadline extended to 19 April 2026. Both passes are still sold after those dates at higher tiers, and reporting on the exact summer and autumn tiers was inconsistent, so check the pass site for the current number. For a single European family week, the local area's six-day pass is usually the relevant purchase anyway.
When should I book flights for a February half-term ski trip?
Honest caveat first: no credible booking-window study exists for ski gateway airports specifically. General airfare research suggests roughly 4 to 10 months ahead for peak international travel, with the lowest average international fares landing around 49 days out for ordinary trips. August through October 2026 sits comfortably inside that for February 2027. One practical note the averages miss: on a peak Saturday, the constraint is often four seats together and a workable arrival time, not the fare, so book earlier if the schedule matters.
Are tour operator early-booking discounts still available in August?
Mostly not, for 2026-27. The pattern is that programmes launch about a year ahead and the deepest discounts sit in the opening days. Club Med's winter 2026/27 sale was reported to open on 3 February 2026 with up to 20 percent off in the first four days. What remains now is availability and terms: coverage of Crystal Ski's 2026/27 programme described a 100 pounds per person deposit with fee-free changes up to 12 weeks before departure. We could only source both from trade coverage rather than the operators' own sites, so confirm the details directly before you commit.
What should I book first?
Accommodation and children's ski school, in that order, and both before flights. Family beds and ski school places in popular resorts run out by week, whereas flights re-price but rarely disappear. So the sequence is: pick the week, book the bed on the most flexible terms you can find, book ski school directly with the school, then buy flights and the transfer together.
How much do prices actually rise the closer to the trip I book?
Real talk: we could not find a credible, methodologically sound study on family ski lodging price escalation by booking month. The dramatic percentages that circulate online come from booking sites with an obvious interest in making you feel urgent, and we are not going to repeat them as fact. What is safe to say is qualitative. In the peak fortnight, availability tightens and the cheapest suitable options go first, so what you mostly lose by waiting is choice rather than a fixed percentage. Outside the peak weeks, waiting carries far less risk.
